Perspectives on Science and Metaphysics
First Barcelona – Urbino Meeting
Università di Urbino "Carlo Bo", Universitat de Barcelona, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona

Urbino, Palazzo Albani / Collegio del Colle, November 2-3, 2012

Very often physics and metaphysics are regarded as mutually isolated intellectual enterprises. On the one hand, questions about change, material composition, causality have seldom been discussed on the background of consolidated physical theories. On the other hand, physicists and philosophers have often been skeptical with respect to the actual capacity of metaphysics to raise interesting problems and to provide a general view of reality.
Yet, recently, many attempts have been made to fill the gap between the two disciplines—although mainly on a programmatic level so far. For instance, considerations about theoretical physics have been crucially important in the reflection about the metaphysics of time, persistence and the part-whole relation. What is, then, the relation between the two inquiries? Is it possible to integrate the two methodologies? What are the problems and the areas where physics and metaphysics more naturally overlap?
Researchers of both Italian and Spanish groups have spent significant efforts tackling issues about metaphysical intimations of contemporary sciences on the one hand, and about the possibility of metaphysical analysis to help clarify crucial notions employed in sciences. It is for this reason that a meeting of the two groups centered on new perspectives in science and metaphysics represents an incredible research opportunity for both the institutions
